Health and Safety Policy for Richmond Man and Van

Richmond Man and Van is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and transport activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety in all aspects of our work, including home and office removals, packing, loading, transportation and unloading of goods.

Health and Safety Objectives

Our objectives are to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and avoidable disruption in the course of providing moving and man and van services. We aim to identify and control risks associated with lifting and carrying, vehicle movements, working in and around client premises and handling customers' belongings. We will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice for removal companies.

Management Responsibilities

Management at Richmond Man and Van has overall responsibility for implementing and reviewing this policy. Management will:

Ensure appropriate risk assessments are carried out for removal work and transport operations.

Provide and maintain safe systems of work, including agreed methods for lifting, loading and securing goods.

Supply suitable equipment, vehicles and protective gear to enable tasks to be carried out safely.

Provide ongoing health and safety training and supervision to employees and contractors.

Investigate accidents, near misses and incidents to identify root causes and prevent recurrence.

Review this policy regularly and update it as our services and legal requirements evolve.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees and contractors working on behalf of Richmond Man and Van share responsibility for maintaining safe working conditions. They are required to:

Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.

Follow all safety instructions, training, procedures and guidance provided.

Use the manual handling techniques and lifting aids supplied for moving items.

Report hazards, damaged equipment, unsafe conditions or practices without delay.

Wear appropriate clothing and any personal protective equipment issued for specific tasks.

Refrain from working under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any substance that could impair judgement or performance.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Prior to each removal or transport job, we assess the work environment and any specific hazards that may be present, including limited access, stairs, fragile items, heavy furniture, awkward loads or shared access with other road users and pedestrians. Where necessary, we will adapt the planned method of work to ensure it is safe and suitable.

Safe systems of work may include:

Planning the order in which items are moved to reduce unnecessary handling.

Allocating sufficient personnel to manage heavy or bulky items safely.

Using trolleys, dollies, straps and other equipment to minimise manual lifting.

Checking floor surfaces, lighting and access routes before moving items.

Ensuring vehicles are parked safely and securely with minimal risk to other road users and passers by.

Manual Handling and Lifting

As a removals and man and van business, manual handling is a key part of our work. To reduce the risk of strains, sprains and other injuries:

All staff receive training on correct lifting techniques and safe team lifting.

Heavy, large or awkward items are handled by two or more people where required.

Lifting aids are used whenever reasonably practicable.

No employee is asked to lift or carry an item that they reasonably believe is beyond their capability.

Work is planned to avoid excessive carrying distances, unnecessary lifting and twisting motions.

Vehicle and Driving Safety

Our vehicles are central to our removal services and are maintained to a high standard to promote safety on the road. We will:

Customer and Public Safety

We recognise that removals often take place in residential streets, shared entrances, offices and communal areas. To protect customers and the public, Richmond Man and Van will:

Keep access routes as clear as possible and avoid blocking fire exits or essential pathways.

Use warning signs or verbal instructions where there is a risk from moving or lifting items.

Take care to minimise trip hazards from equipment, packing materials and tools.

Handle customers' property respectfully and safely to avoid damage or hazards.

Coordinate with customers to schedule work at times that reduce disruption and risk.

Training, Information and Supervision

We provide appropriate induction and ongoing training to all staff, covering manual handling, safe loading and unloading, vehicle safety, use of equipment and emergency procedures. Supervisors monitor work practices and provide guidance to ensure that safety instructions are followed. Health and safety information is communicated in a clear and accessible way so that all team members understand their responsibilities.

Accidents, Incidents and Near Misses

All accidents, incidents and near misses that occur during removal or transport activities must be reported to management as soon as possible. Richmond Man and Van will record such events, investigate causes, and take corrective action to reduce the likelihood of recurrence. Where necessary, we will review risk assessments, methods of work and training materials in light of any findings.

Continuous Improvement and Policy Review

Richmond Man and Van is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance.
